What is Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga?

Ashtanga Vinyasa is a precisely and scientifically composed method for healing, strengthening and cleansing the body.  It is focused and dynamic-the sequence of poses builds as a practitioner becomes stronger mentally and physically, meaning that it is genuinely suitable for almost anyone, regardless of their age, level of experience or fitness.  Benefits go far beyond just the physical, but some of those that might be more visible and obvious are:

  • aiding weight loss
  • building muscular strength and tone
  • strengthening internal organs
  • increasing lung capacity
  • improving cardiovascular fitness

How does Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga work?

It is a sequence of poses that flow with the breath.  Using other subtle techniques we learn to focus and unite the body, breath, heart and mind.  One builds the practice as appropriate to the individual student.  Everyone starts with the same foundation: learning to breathe and move through a sequence of synchronised breaths and movements called Sun Salutations.  From there as the body becomes stronger and more flexible, and the practitioner more aware, I guide you through the rest of the sequence bit by bit. Because the sequence of poses is set and consistent this allows you to practice and build your experience between times spent with a teacher. Self practice is key to the Ashtanga Vinyasa method, teaching one to build a level of physical discipline and mental focus that translates into ‘real life’
